In
1950 President Bowman had a railroad bell donated
by the Erie Railroad placed on the Commons.
The brick structure surrounding it was designed
by architecture student Arvid Johnson. In early
years, the bell was rung to celebrate athletic
victories. In later years, the bell signaled
the start of political rallies. Down through
the years, the Commons has served as a place
where students gather to throw a Frisbee, walk
a dog, or stage various events.
